At the laying of the foundation stone for the Nagarjunasagar project in 1955, Jawaharlal Nehru said he was convinced that this was the answer to the extreme poverty of the local tracts. 'Would my people be poor after the completion of the Nagarjunasagar dam?' he said.
The project, the first to be executed in AP, has worked a green revolution of sorts in the five districts it serves-Guntur, Prakasam, Khammam, Nalgonda and parts of West Godavari.
It was the state's first experience with a mammoth project.
Nagarjunasagar multipurpose Dam is constructed across Krishna River near Nandikonda village in Nalgonda District. This Dam is now harnessed to an installed capacity of 815.6 MW.
